# LocalPilot > LocalPilot is a free, open-source coding agent for VS Code that runs on local models from Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp or vLLM, and can install a model for you in one click. Agent mode, parallel agents, skills, subagents, screenshots, MCP and hardware-aware model management, with no subscription, account or telemetry. A private, offline alternative to GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code. LocalPilot is a free, MIT-licensed Visual Studio Code extension (`localpilot.localpilot-agent`, version 1.1.1). It is a complete coding agent — agent / ask / plan modes, parallel agents with change review, skills and subagents, @-mentions and workspace context, screenshots and vision models, inline completions and MCP servers — that runs entirely against local model servers such as Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, vLLM and Docker Model Runner (or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint). It can set models up by itself: with no model found it installs or starts Ollama and downloads a smallest-first starter set sized to the machine's RAM/GPU; a model manager shows what fits, enables/disables/removes installed models and installs from a curated catalog; automatic routing sends image turns to a vision model, completions to the smallest FIM model and falls back when a model is offline. No account, no telemetry, no code leaves the machine unless the user configures a remote endpoint. It is a private, offline alternative to GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code. It also reuses existing CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .cursorrules, .cursor/rules, .claude/skills, .claude/agents and .github/copilot-instructions.md files.
